There’s nowhere quite like Abbotsbury.  We may have lived in this area for over 30 years, but we never tire of this lovely village.  There is so much to do in Abbotsbury,  It is full of quaint oldie worldie charm whilst having some very unique and special attractions that are wonderful to go back to again and again.

Abbotsbury Swannery

Abbotsbury Swannery is the only managed colony of nesting swans.  We are not talking small numbers.  The path through the swannery takes you within  a few feet of hundreds, if not thousands of swans.  During the spring nesting seasons you will see the parents taking care of their cygnets right by the path.  There are daily feeding times when visitors can get involved.

The swannery is set onto the lagoon behind Chesil beach.  This freshwater lagoon is the largest in England.

There is an enormous swan shaped maze that you can get thoroughly lost in.

Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens

Abbotosbury Subtropical Gardens are set on a hillside dropping right down to the sea along the Jurassic coast.  This aspect gives it a unique climate which enables it to grow some really exotic plants to tropical proportions.  To be described as one of Alan Titchmarsh’s favourite gardens, you get an idea of how special this place is.

As well as the garden there is an excellent cafe.

St Catherine's Chapel

This 14th century chapel was built on a hilltop by the monks at Abbotsbury Abbey.  The abbey itself is now a ruin.

The chapels location gives it stunning views over the length of Chesil beach.  The interior has earth floors and no seat.  The local parish has the  occasional service held here.

The ‘wishing holes’ in the chapel are where local women used to pray to St Catherine and ask her to find them a husband.

Completely free to visit, it is highly recommended.
